Dear Penn State Alumni and Friends,
We hope that you will consider supporting your local Penn State Chapter of the Alumni Association and join our chapter or renew your previous membership. The annual membership dues are $15. Of your dues, $5 goes to scholarship; $3.50 to activities; $3 to mailings; $1.50 to website expenses; $1 to seminars; and $1 to miscellaneous operating expenses.
Endowed Scholarship
For more than a decade now, our endowed scholarship fund has been the primary benefactor of our annual budget. The first $5 of every membership goes directly to the fund. Last year, the Chapter contributed $3,700 to the endowment's principal balance through membership dollars, member contributions, and member related fund raising activities—nearly $13 per member. The growth of the endowment has allowed us to help many local students attend Penn State, and it would not be remotely possible without your help, support, and yes, your membership.
Communications Newsletters and, increasingly, our web presence is another expense that your membership dollars helps to defray. The national alumni association subsidizes some of the cost of printing and mailing this newsletter to more than 1500 alumni in the Triangle region.
Activities Chapter activities are also a major benefit of membership. What was once limited to football game parties and the occasional picnic has expanded to include wine tastings, theater events, baseball games, hockey games, museum events, and dance marathon parties. The activities list is constantly evolving and expanding, and it is only limited by what our volunteers have time to organize.
And, of course, Penn State football game parties. But your local chapter has access to football tickets every year through the generosity of some long standing members.
These tickets are sold at face value to chapter members via a seniority based system (see page 3). Lastly, a portion of your membership dollars help us fund our many chapter service programs. Some examples of these programs are college fairs at local high schools, student sendoff activities, and the current effort underway to bring Penn State license plates to North Carolina.
As with everything else I've mentioned, these programs would not be possible without your continued support of our organization through your membership.
License Plate EffortFor the past year, the Triangle Chapter has been working with the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles and the national Penn State Alumni Association to issue official Penn State license plates for the fine state of North Carolina.
Penn State has an opportunity to become just the second Big Ten school with an official NC license plate and the first from the state of Pennsylvania. We need 300 paid applications to submit to the NC DMV. Until then, no license plate can be issued.
Presently, the license plates are ordered by printing out the application on our
website and mailing it in to the chapter PO Box. We hope you send in your application, because without your efforts, the Penn State plates will not be possible.
Chance to Win Football Tickets All Chapter Members who join by August 31 will receive a chance to win two tickets to a PSU football game (TBD). The drawing will be held at the first game party. For each additional $10 donation to the scholarship fund, you will receive another chance to win. You do not have to be present to win.
